Findings from a new study indicate regularly experiencing incivility in the workplace from the same person — including rudeness, being ignored or being put down — can negatively affect employees’ health.

In addition to affecting employees’ sense of belonging and causing feelings of embarrassment and job insecurity, being treated poorly at work can also produce physical symptoms such as stomach problems, sleeplessness and headaches.

Results from the workplace incivility study, conducted by the Haskayne School of Business and London School of Economics and Political Science, were recently published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior.
