Organizations may need to provide more training and prevention

Approximately one in seven American employees don’t feel safe at work, according to new research from the Society for Human Resource Management — which also found workplace violence has increased in recent years.

Nearly half of HR professionals say their organization has experienced a workplace violence incident — a 36 percent increase from 2012. More than half said an incident had occurred in the past year.

Although the majority of HR professionals say their organization provides training to help them respond to an act of violence at work, more than a third of employers do not.

Nearly one out of five HR professionals say they aren’t sure what they should do if they witness or are involved in a workplace violence incident. More than half aren’t sure if their organization has a workplace violence prevention program.
